I first got into web development and internet marketing after witnessing the contrast between our mass consumption at home and the poverty I saw whilst volunteering in India. This lead to the creation of Give As You Get.net - later known as rectifi - a shopping website that redistributed commissions I earnt by advertising online stores to charity.
Initially the site was a shopping directory, before becoming a fully fledged price comparison website. I took no personal profit from the website, just keeping enough to pay the website's hosting bills, and over a number of years the sites raised in excess of £20,000 for charity. At one point the website was featured on the BBC News website as well as shown internationally on BBC News 24's technology program, Click.
Sadly due to other commitments in life - studying at university, volunteering for two years with VSO and then needing to find work - the site fell by the wayside, with an ugly, outdated design and dwindling revenues due to neglect and a lack of promotion, as well as major changes in the way search engines value websites.
When I started in 2003 I opted to take no money from the site as it was not the reason I wanted to get into internet marketing; of course as life went on this meant no time or incentive to improve the site and no profits to invest in promoting the site. I applaud EveryClick for modifying the concept and taking a profit, enabling them to grow to the point where they have now raised in excess of £1m for charity.
Although the sites are now closed I try to continue applying the same ethos to the work I do in life, using the flexible nature of online work to allow me to spend time volunteering and to donate regularly to charity.
